What Links Foca and Marseilles?
While many think of Foça (the ancient Phocaea) as a tranquil summer getaway in Izmir, it boasts a vibrant history as one of the 12 celebrated Ionian cities founded around the 600s BC! The adventurous Phocaeans weren’t just pioneers of trade; they boldly established colonies throughout the Mediterranean, with Marseilles emerging as a shining gem among them—a bustling port city in France that continues to thrive today.
Introducing the Foca-Marseilles – A Journey into History Project!
Imagine sailing the open seas as the Phocaeans once did! In an extraordinary project launched in 2009, a team set off on a breathtaking voyage from Foça to Marseilles, not by airplane, but on a magnificent ship reminiscent of ancient times. This historic journey aimed to spotlight the profound connections between Anatolia and the Mediterranean world, showcasing their rich interaction from the dawn of civilization to our modern era.
What About the Incredible Boat?
Meet "Kybele," the star of this ambitious project! Designed after extensive consultations with the Head of the Foça Excavation and informed by archaeological discoveries, this ancient warship features 20 mighty oars and a billowing sail—perfectly capturing the essence of maritime heritage. The innovative design was crafted by the Izmir Branch Office of the Chamber of Marine Architects and Marine Engineers, with the rigorous oversight of the Turkish Lloyd Foundation. This remarkable endeavor was even honored during the Turkey in France season from July 2009 to March 2010, earning the prestigious "Label" title, endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey and the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
The Voyage of a Lifetime!
Setting sail in June 2009, Kybele embarked on an exhilarating adventure, tracing the historical pathways of the Mediterranean. Over 54 days, the ship navigated 1,700 nautical miles along the breathtaking coastlines of Greece, Italy, and France. The crew made thrilling stops at iconic ports like Velia, Aleria, Nice, and Antipolis—each a testament to the daring legacy of the Phocaeans. In 2010, Kybele returned triumphantly to Turkey, participating in festivities as part of the "Istanbul 2010 - European Capital of Culture" program.
